New Comic Day hangover

Big week this week with both of my DC books coming out, a few X-Books here and there and…what am I forgetting…oh yeah!  Second Coming ended!  How about that?  On the list this week:

  •  Booster Gold #35 in which our hero gets tossed directly into a caper from the past with Blue Beetle.
  •  Justice League: Generation Lost #5 in which the team takes a moment to interact and declare their mission statement.
  •  X-Men: Second Coming #2 in which the X-Men deal with the costs of their victory.
  •  X-Men: Hellbound #3 in which the time killing battle ends since the teleporters can return.
  •  Uncanny X-Men: Heroic Age in which the X-Men get welcomed into the new bright and shiny Marvel U.
  •  X-Women #1 in which scantily clad women make sexy poses.
  •  And X-Force: Sex and Violence #1 in which a story that doesn’t need to be told gets told.

There will be analysis after the jump and said analysis will contain SPOILERS.

New Comic Day Hangover

The 4th of July on Sunday knocked shipping back a day, so New Comic Day fell on Thursday this week.  But it’s a small price to pay for a Brand New Event going on with the X-Men, just as the previous Brand New Event is almost wrapping up.  So let’s get to it.  This week we have:

X-Force #28 in which we get the penultimate chapter of Second Coming with a hearty helping of deus ex.

And X-Men #1 in which we have vampires!  You know, just like the ones all of you potential customers love in that movie that just came out.

As always, there will be SPOILERS which may or may not sparkle in the sunlight after the jump.

Losing Hope for the Messiah

We are a day away from the penultimate chapter of Second Coming in the X-books (as well as a day away from the launch of Curse of the Mutants) and a nagging question keeps floating around my head.  We’ve now had almost three complete crossover events focusing on Hope Summers, the so-called “messiah child”, and we still have no idea just what the hell is so important about her.  Thus far, she’s spent her entire life either being kidnapped by villains (Messiah CompleX), running from villains (Messiah War, all of Cable, Second Coming).  We’re supposed to believe that eventually it will be revealed what is so good about her, but man, couldn’t you drop us some sort of bone?  We only have two issues left of a 14 part story titled for her return and she’s done nothing!

Here’s what we do know about Hope:

  • First mutant born since M-Day.
  • Cable knew her as a messiah in his future, while Bishop knew her as a tyrant in his.
  • She has the signature red hair/green eyes of Jean Grey.
  • She healed Rogue’s out of control powers just by touching her.
  • She’s wearing the Phoenix logo in post Second Coming images (see above).

And that’s it.  Will something big happen in the Second Coming finale?  Oh, absolutely.  Did they wait a little too long on it, allowing for interest in the character to wane?  Also absolutely.  The X-Men have been caught in a series of crossovers to the point where little seems to really matter, as it’s all just filler while waiting for the next mega-event…if they even bother giving space between them.  So is Hope going to be the game-changer as hyped?  Probably not.

After all, we will need a mega-event to fix M-Day, right?

New comic day hangover

Last week was pretty rough for me, and it was Friday before I actually picked up my comics. I also picked up my girlfriend’s so I have an extra issue to comment on this week. So bonus! Enough rambling – here’s this last week’s list!

Legion of Super-Heroes #2 in which I have decided to drop the book.

X-Factor #206 in which the tie-in to Second Coming ends.

X-Men Legacy #237 in which the X-Men actually start winning.

Avengers #2 in which I don’t see the point of so many Avengers books.

There will be SPOILERS within.  Ye have been warned!

New comic day hangover

Strangely light week for me this week…but my bank account’s not complaining.  Here’s what’s up for this week.

New Mutants #14 in which everyone runs around fighting…still.

And as a bonus, we have Birds of Prey #2 when things GET REAL for the girls.

My thoughts after the jump, but there are SPOILERS…just so you know.

Retro Comic Day hangover

I have no new issues coming out this week, so as to keep the reviewing flow going, I’ve decided to hop into the time-mobile and travel back 11 years and take a look at what books I would have bought back in June of 1999.  Jeez – 1999 was 11 years ago?  Ouch.  This (that) month, we have (had)…

Uncanny X-Men #371 in which we get a needless crossover with the tech characters of the Marvel U.

X-Force #92 in which we take a brief moment to bring in a character from X-Men 2099.

Generation X #54 in which we get a big fight scene.

X-Men #91 in which we get more tech character crossover.

And that’s it.  By this point, both X-Factor and Excalibur had mercifully received the axe and neither X-Force nor Generation X would make it another two years.

I usually would warn of spoilers, but come on – these are 11 years old.  I’ll have them behind the jump anyway.

New Comic Day hangover

A light week for me this week, still trudging through Second Coming and finding myself increasingly fatigued by it.  We’ll get straight to it.

This week, I’ll be looking at:

Justice League: Generation Lost #2 in which everyone hates the JLI again.

X-Force #27 in which I get tired of watching the X-Men get their asses kicked.

And X-Men Second Coming Revelations Blind Science #1 in which…you know what?  I’m just amazed I typed that entire title out.

Discussion will follow the jump.  And there will be SPOILERS.  So click it or get lost.  Wait, don’t leave!  Just click!

New Comic Day hangover

Eventually, I will buy my comics on Wednesday instead of Thursday and get this thing back to its correct day. Until then, though – he we are! This week is a light one:

Legion of Super-Heroes #1 in which the new old Legion kicks off with a follow-up to an earlier story and a tie-in.

X-Factor #205 in which the team starts coming back together during Second Coming.

And X-Men Legacy #236 in which a whole bunch of characters make porn faces while crap goes down.

Spoiler-laced looks after the jump.

New Comic Day hangover

Big week for the Marvel U as the Real Big Event closes up.  Elsewhere, new DC runs launch and the X-Men plow on through Second Coming.  Here’s what’s on this week’s list:

Booster Gold #32 in which way too much dialogue sets off not a whole lot of story.

Justice League: Generation Lost #1 in which four of the JLI reunite for a Real Big Story.

Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1 in which the X-Men look weird.

New Avengers Finale in which New Avengers ends before a new New Avengers launches.

New Mutants #13 in which Hope meets the rest of the class.

Siege #4 in which a universal reset button is pressed.

I’ll be covering the Siege event as a whole in a separate post, so we’ll leave that one alone for now.  As for the other five, my thoughts (with SPOILERS included) will follow after the jump.  So jump already.

New Comic Day hangover

We’re still mid-event, and I’m missing a mini series issue, but I’m covering what I wouldn’t spoil last week, so here we go!  Wow…that sentence was terrible.

Brightest Day #1 kicks off the year-long, bi-weekly title in which we get the continuation of the issue that already kicked off the year-long, bi-weekly title.

Red Robin #12 in which Tim Drake faces off with Ra’s al Ghul.

And Uncanny X-Men #524 in which Second Coming gets a down moment to deal with the fallout of X-Force #26.

As always, spoilerifficness after the jump.
