Get your manga downloaded quickly, kids

Uh oh – it’s happening again!

As if tearing the hearts out of thousands of freeloaders with the closing of HTML Comics wasn’t bad enough, publishers (reportedly including Japan’s Digital Comic Association, Square Enix, VIZ Media, TOKYOPOP, Vertical, Inc., the Tuttle-Mori Agency and Yen Press) are now getting together to start shutting down the rampant onslaught of so-called ‘Scanlation’ sites.  If you didn’t deduce it already, these sites scan manga, editing the pages with their own English translations.

The outrage is surely going to focus on ‘but they won’t translate most of these mangas for us!’ which I honestly kind of agree with.  It sucks that a lot of this stuff doesn’t make it officially across the Pacific Ocean.  Some of them simply wouldn’t have the market to warrant the cost.  Others simply don’t get translated for whatever reason.

The problem still remains that these sites are reproducing copyrighted material illegally and providing them for download.  And unlike HTML Comics, many of these spots absolutely provide the option to download the materials to your computer.

So it looks like some of these sites will be going down soon.  And no doubt, many more will pop up in their place.
