Welcome to today’s entry to the Countdown to Fables #100, where on Tuesday and Friday I recap a story told within the pages of Fables. This will happen up until issue #100 is released on November 24th. If you’re new to the countdown, an archive of all previous entries can be found under our Special Features menu. Today’s story is titled “The Birthday Secret.” In this story, the cubs celebrate their fifth birthday, while Snow White and Bigby Wolf let the cubs in on a family secret. The identity of the Adversary does not appear in the recap, which is after the break.
With the preparations for war, more human Fables were coming to The Farm to await further instructions. Rose Red and Boy Blue were telling people whether they were assigned to sniper school, commando school, or told to stay behind and work on building equipment. Boy Blue then rides with Rose Red to deliver supplies to Fabletown and to watch Flycatcher’s journey. In an open field on The Farm, a couple of people were participating in war games activities, when suddenly the wolf pack surprised them. Snow White, on the flying carpet, yells at her cubs for interfering, and tells them to return home. At one of the commando training schools that Fabletown purchased, a group of commandos is stalking Bigby Wolf. As they think they are about trap him, he evades them, and sneaks up behind them. They complain about it not being fair, and he responds that the enemy will not fight fair. If they can ever sneak up on him, they’ll be able to sneak up on anyone. He tells them that for now though he’s heading home for the cubs’ birthday.
Back in New York, Boy Blue picks up Bigby from the airport. Blue is thankful for the chance to get away from The Farm. Despite his cushy sentence, he did miss the freedom of being able to leave at any time. The next morning, the cubs wake up Snow and Bigby at 5 a.m. since it’s their fifth birthday. In the Farm’s village, Rose Red and Boy Blue are waiting for Snow to come pick them up, when the conversation turns to kids and marriage. They have an awkward moment, then switch the conversation to the weather. After confirming with the cubs that they can keep a secret, even from Aunt Rose and Boy Blue, Snow and Bigby tell the cubs about their other brother, Ghost. The cubs then spend time asking Ghost a variety of questions, and Ghost accidentally mess up some of the cubs new toys.
The important bit of information from this story is that the cubs now know about Ghost. Although, we do see some early preparations for war, and another awkward moment between Rose Red and Boy Blue.
Up next, Kingdom Come
